Goats
farming
Project : |
| |
|
ASSIST
project of goats rearing started in December 2006 ,and
launched officially on 21 May 2007. The project is
located in the Eastern Province at Nyagatare. It started
with Seven (7) Nanny goats and One (1) Billy goat which
were donated by Rwanda Animal
Resources Development Authority (RARDA) which
operates in the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal
Resources. The goats came from South Africa
and are of Boer species. RARDA accept to give additional
20 South Africa Billy goats that will be distributed to
the beneficiaries grouped in Cooperatives . As a result of the
donation, ASSIST organization established an ANIMAL
DEMONSTRATION FARM on organisation’s land (20 acres) at Nyagatare. This project is also supported by
Itafari Foundation ,
an USA based NGO.
The general
objective of the project is to ensure food security
and poverty alleviation by providing
developmental means (goats farming ) of obtaining
financial income with special focus on Child headed
households in Eastern and North Province.
The direct beneficiaries of the project are 350 Child
headed households (Orphans heading families) grouped
in 35 cooperatives, located in 2
provinces, each cooperative will be composed of 10
members who will be given 15
local goats, donated by Itafari Foundation.
In
this project, ASSIST intends to promote and develop
animal rearing by setting up modern goat farms
(introduction of exotic goat breeds that
will provide good meat ,both in quality and
quantity ). |

:: Project
purpose |
|
.............................................................................................. |
| |
|
Then the ASSIST
project for
promoting goat
farming among
Child Headed
Households was
proposed due to
the following
reasons: |
|
|
|
1.
Production: Goats have high rate of production.
Goats can produce twice a year. The first production
comes when it is 10 months old and can produce 1 to 3
kids at once. Moreover, goats can be kept for a
relatively longer period, up to 7 years after producing
6 times in its life span |
|
2.
Feeding: Goats feed on cheap and common pasture
compared to cattle. Goats depend on common pasture like
passpurum, elephant grass, “setariya” and crop leftovers |
|
3.
Manure: Goats produce good quality manure. Three (3)
goats kept together on a simple farm can produce 2 tones
of manure in a year |
|
4.
Family incomes: Animal rearing especially in form of
goat generates good financial income to the family. Goat
meat is normally on a high demand, is sold and roasted
in drinking places (bars) form of “brochettes” hence it
is expensive. |
|
5.Veterinary Care : Animal diseases rarely affect
goats and the few cases that occur are easily treated
and the drugs used are cheap |
